Day 1361 - Jun.21.22 - Learn to pay attention

Pay attention. Pay attention to what’s in front of you, not only your phone. Stop being distracted. Stop allowing your phone to hijack your brain and focus. Train yourself to pay attention. To focus on the task at hand and not anything else. Remove distractions. Put your phone in another room. Lock it in the bathroom. Give it to a family member to hide and don’t ask for it back until you finish what you need to. Distractions are too easy to find right now. Temptation is instantaneous and everywhere. Our brains are not built for this environment. What did you expect when media companies spend billions of dollars a year on how to hack your brain? The current state of the world. Most of us have forgotten how to speak to people. How to be present in the environment around you. How to look the person in the eye across from you and try to understand them. Our brains are too distracted by the past and future rather than the present. Did this always exist or is this a current phenomenon? I’m not sure. Problems that happen now have likely already happened but it feels different today. We’ve never had the convenience and access to instantaneous distraction and temptation that we have now. So take back control of your mind. It’s up to you to do the difficult work. It’s won’t be easy but it sure as hell will be worth it. Learn to pay attention.
