Let people go:
Let people go.
Those in your past.
The ones you held close.
The ones you grew up with.
Let them go.
People grow apart.
People move on.
They have more shared experiences with other people than they do with you.
So why do you care?
Why are you so caught up in being liked by them?
Welcome to human psychology.
The thing that’s so hard to fight against.
We all want to be liked.
Especially by those closest to us.
The ones we hold dear in our hearts.
Even if they don’t see us in the same light.
We want to be close to them.
Guess what?
People move on.
They don’t care about you.
No one does.
We’re all busy in our own lives.
If you spend a lot of time with someone, you’ll likely be in their life going forward.
If you don’t, goodbye.
Doesn’t matter how long you spent with them as a kid.
Doesn’t matter how you grew up with them.
Doesn’t matter that they came to your house to play tackle basketball.
They’ve moved on.
And so should you.
Had a birthday party today.
Was for a family friend.
A guy I’ve known since before I was born.
Our dads met when they were 12.
Now they’re approaching 60.
We want to this bar for his birthday.
Great time.
Lots of fun.
Caught up with a bunch of folks.
But there was an elephant in the room.
Most of them had been to a wedding the night before.
A wedding for a girl I’ve known since before I was born.
Grew up going to each other’s houses.
Lived down the street from one another.
Thought me and my siblings and would get an invite.
Nope.
Didn’t make the cut.
It hurt at the beginning.
Now I’m grateful for it.
I know now where I stand with her.
It’s better to know that now than later.
She won’t be coming to anything I’m doing.
Done.
That’s how it works in Indian culture.
Maybe I’m petty.
Maybe that’s too much.
Doesn’t matter.
My parents raised me a certain way.
Show up for people who show up for you.
If they don’t want you to be a part of their life, why should you want to be a part of theirs?
You shouldn’t.
Doesn’t mean it’s not hard.
Doesn’t mean it doesn’t suck.
Doesn’t mean it shouldn’t bother you.
But you gotta move on.
Keep people around you who want to be in your life.
Who care about you.
Who show up for you.
For those who don’t.
Goodbye.
Let people go.
