Don't underestimate your ripple effect

Don't underestimate your ripple effect

Don’t underestimate your ripple effect:

Don’t underestimate your ripple effect.

One action can affect millions of other people in ways you can’t even imagine.

You don’t know how far your impact can go.

Was reminded of that yesterday.

Heard this Yes Theory podcast speaking with some founders of the Buried Life.

Two influences of mine who changed the way I see the world.

They’re part of why I got here.

The Buried Life story was a show abouot 4 dudes from Canada who dropped everything and started on this journey with a single question.

‘What do you want to do before you die?’

They wrote down a list of 100 things they wanted to do.

Play basketball with Obama.

Kiss the Stanley Cup.

Dive with sharks.

You know, crazy stuff.

The show was about that.

Chasing their dreams.

And for every dream they accomplished, they accomplished a stranger’s dream.

The show is epic.

Definitely check it out if you can - stream it here free

This podcast episode was with 2 of the guys reminiscing on those days.

The reason the show happened was because of one guy.

This kid in high school they saw start his own clothing brand.

A person around them they saw succeed.

At the time the clothes were featured on national television.

To them, that was huge.

This guy who sat next to them in class pursued his dreams and got somewhere.

The coolest part was all 4 of the Buried life guys independently were inspired by his story.

His answer for how he did it?

‘Literally just do it. No one is stopping you. No one.’

So these 4 guys met, bought a van, got a camera and starting traveling America trying to accomplish their dreams.

They ended up being on the biggest shows on MTV and wrote a #1 best-seller.

Matt, the host of the podcast, then talked about how Yes Theory was inspired by that.

He told the story of how he discovered those guys when he was 18, told Thomas about it at Mcgill and they were both inspired.’

What if we could do something different?

That idea has now turned into Yes Theory and Seek Discomfort.

A channel started by 4 guys who met at university and did the same thing.

Pushed themselves to be uncomfortable, travel the world and inspire people.

They’ve done that for me in more ways they can imagine.

Started watching them below 10k subscribers when they were called Project 30.

Now they have almost 10M subscribers and their ethos is seek discomfort.

Coincidentally the name of their brand.

And the name of my tattoo.

Those words are on my body forever.

It’s been my motto.

It’s why I’m here.

It’s why I pushed myself to do something different.

Seeing those guys similar in age pursue what they wanted was the inspiration that got me through my career transition.

Going from doctor to investor.

It was hard.

It was a struggle.

It was lonely.

Pursuing an unconventional path while everyone around you is criticizing you.

But they showed me it was possible.

Now I’m here.

Hundreds of blog posts, hundreds of book notes, doctor, healthcare investor and author now at the precipice of starting my own media empire.

I’m not here without them.

And neither the Buried Life.

It was a show I watched in high school.

One I almost forgot existed.

Yet I knew why I loved Yes Theory when I saw them.

They were so similar.

Stood for such similar principles.

Dreaming the impossible.

Pursuing your dreams.

Pushing the boundary of your imagination.

Showing other people what is possible.

Not taking no for an answer.

Figuring it out on the fly.

Giving back to your community.

Helping out other people around you.

Such similar vibes.

The conclusion from this episode was that.

How Yes Theory was inspired by the Buried Life.

But also how much one small decision from one random guy inspired all of this.

Think about how many millions of people around the world have been inspired by these messages.

All because a guy in high school decided to start a clothing line.

You don’t know how far your impact will go.

It will extend far more than you can ever imagine.

How?

People are inspired by those around them.

Those they can see.

Not in a screen.

But directly in front of them.

Be that for someone.

That’s what I’m trying to do.

That’s what this all is.

Create and scale a global media company to teach people what I wish I knew when I was younger.

Educate the world at scale using modern forms of media.

But I’m only here because of these influences.

I’m only here because of these people.

I’m only here because of the decisions these folks made.

And for them, it was all because one person inspired them.

One person showed them.

One person proved that it’s possible to change the world.

Don’t underestimate your ripple effect.
