I am a nobody:
I am a nobody.
Just one of several billion.
Existing in this blip of time.
On one planet out of trillions.
Waking up every day unsure of what this all means.
Figuring life out as I go.
The past is meaningless because it’s gone.
The future is unknown because it doesn’t exist.
The present is all that matters.
Yet we’re always trying to get out.
Get away from what’s in front of us.
Playing a million scenarios in our heads that will never come true.
Believing that we’re special.
That we matter.
But do we?
Does any individual matter?
Can one person really change the world?
I’m not so sure.
Some days I wake up with belief.
Others I wake up with pessimism.
What’s the value of any one individual?
Not much if you’re not white and ask the western media.
A lot of you’re worth billions of dollars.
Why?
Why is the value of an individual defined by money and colour?
Slavery.
White privilege.
Capitalism.
Yet an individual can do a lot.
An individual can inspire many others through their words and actions.
That’s powerful.
Yet in the grand scheme, is still irrelevant.
I’ve been thinking about this recently with celebrity culture, particularly after the Will Smith and Chris Rock incident at the Oscars.
Celebrities are followed by millions of people.
Millions who watch their every move, love reading gossip and obsess over every movie they make.
But think about how many more millions to billions don’t even know who that person is.
We’re trapped in believing that having millions of likes or followers means you’re high status.
But be careful because those numbers can make you feel like a somebody.
Someone whose worth means more than someone else.
Don’t believe that.
One human life is one human life.
We overestimate how lucky we are to be in the positions that we’re in.
How we were the one sperm out of billions to reach our mom’s egg at the exact right time, be born into the exact right place with the exact right environment to allow us to succeed and got lucky along the way.
Do not underestimate how fortunate you are to have your life.
Search for your purpose, not anyone else’s.
You are a nobody just like I am, and our lives are largely meaningless in the grand scheme of things.
But to us, our lives are everything.
So find the purpose that makes you happy and fulfilled to wake up every morning.
Getting there will take time and failure.
But that’s all part of the journey of being a nobody.
Any time you achieve success or think you’re hot shit because you’ve done something no one else has done, remember - you’re a nobody.
I am a nobody, just like you.
