Individuals have never had more power than they have today. Social media has allowed the individual to flourish more than any other point in history. If you have a social media profile, you’re fundamentally a creator. Because of the views these individuals are generating, they have more power than legacy media institutions. They an control their own narrative. NBA players realized the power when Lebron left. Actors used to have to go to magazines or agencies or talk shows to get promoted but the next generation of actors are creators because they drive traffic. Legacy media brands are having their power eroded through individuals. Because every profile online is theoretically equal, there’s so much noise. How the algorithm chooses to display info to you is based on your preferences and if you don’t interact with news stories on your timeline, the algorithm will shift to show you less of that. But if you have a favourite creator who you always engage, their content rises to the top. So individuals now control direction and political opinion more than in anytime in history, especially considering their access to the world. People have the ability to distribute anywhere and institutions are losing the battle. It’s fun to start creating
