Leave your crown at the door

Leave your crown at the door

Leave your crown at the door:

Leave your crown at the door.

Heard that today in a story from Indra Nooyi.

For those who don’t know, she was the former CEO and chairman of Pepsi.

She’s a brown woman who grew up in India.

Moved to the US and accomplished the American dream.

Led one of the largest beverage companies in the world.

There’s a story she told about this phrase.

‘Leave your crown at the door.’

The day she got promoted to CEO of Pepsi, she was driving home.

Super excited to tell everyone in her family about it.

When she walked in the door, her mom told her to go out and grab milk.

She was furious.

But she went out, grabbed the milk and came back.

She started yelling at her mom and told her how she just became the Pepsi CEO.

Her mom said this.

‘Listen to me. You may be the president or whatever of PepsiCo, but when you come home, you are a wife and a mother and a daughter. Nobody can take your place.’

‘So leave that crown in the garage.’

That is a bar.

A line that’s hard to forget.

No matter how far you go in your life, we all have roles.

Those roles have different duties and responsibilities.

Just because you’re a big shot in one area of your life, doesn’t excuse you from doing what you have to do when you’re home.

We all have roles to play.

When I’m in my parent’s house, I’m still a son.

I still have to do my bed, get the laundry and do the dishes.

No matter how far I go, those responsibilities will never stop.

It’s a reminder to keep your ego in check.

A healthy ego is good.

It drives you.

It keeps you going.

But it can also overpower you.

It can make you believe you’re something you’re not.

That you’re better than.

That certain jobs and roles are beneath you.

All that is wrong.

If that’s the way you think, you have to check yourself.

We all need our egos checked.

We all need to remember to leave our crowns at the door.
