Look for scale

Look for scale

Look for scale:

Look for scale.

The ability to grow quickly.

Take advantage of markets where the incremental input per output is leveraged.

Across code.

Media.

Capital.

And labour.

Population size matters.

It’s hard to underrate how big some markets are.

I grew up in Canada my whole life.

Went to the US this weekend for an NFL game.

Saw my favourite team, the Ravens, play for the first time live.

Still remember their 2012 Super Bowl watching it my dorm room at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

4:30 in the morning screaming into my pillow.

Such fond memories.

Anyway, after the game we went to a bar.

Was with a friend I’ve known since I was 3.

Sat at the bar and a guy bumped into us.

He said ‘hey guys, thanks for opening a spot at the bar for me.’

‘No problem’ although I really didn’t do anything.

We proceed to chat with this guy and turns out he’s a massive real estate developer.

He’s drunk as hell but a few minutes later, he brings his wife over.

Turns out they run the biggest brewery in Baltimore.

Huh.

Who knew.

My friend and I spoke right after and my conclusion was this -

‘The scale of the US market is INSANE.’

INSANE relative to Canada.

Or any other market around the world.

The amount of money in certain industries is trillions of dollars.

We were talking about American football and the NFL.

Every weekend around America, not only on Sunday but also Saturday, millions of people are at bars, restaurants and stadiums eating and drinking.

Think about all the hospitality dollars flowing on those days.

How about the food consumed?

The alcohol consumed?

The scale of the NFL and football in America is unlike anything else in the world.

Soccer is larger but the markets don’t compare.

The NFL did 18.6 billion in revenue in 2022.

The next biggest league was half.

The amount of money football provides for local economies is unmatched.

There’s 10x the population in America compared to Canada.

The Canadian economy is smaller than that of a single state.

Was speaking to my cousin about that in Orlando last week.

He’s moving his restaurant operation down to the US.

Why?

Market size.

He can develop tons of restaurants around America that’ll make way more than Canada.

Americans also have a going-out and drinking culture.

Bars and restaurants are packed on game days.

Now imagine a country like that in the next 20 years.

Where’s that?

India.

Paul Graham reposted an article about how many middle-class Indians there will be in the next few decades.

430 million in 2020 to 719 million by 2046 according to their estimates

300 million more people in the next 20 years.

That’s significant.

Imaging accessing and scaling products in that market.

You just have to have a small amount of that, and you’ve won.

Forever.

This is what people miss about leverage.

For the similar time input, it can produce massive output.

The 4 forms of leverage as per Naval.

Labour and capital are permissioned.

Code and Media are permissionless.

There’s a reason I’m using one of those.

Media.

Writing scales.

Audio scales.

Video scales.

Newsletters scale.

Books scale.

Courses scale.

All these efforts scale.

Does any individual effort guarantee success?

Absolutely not.

But sustained effort into building scale has massive ramifications.

I’ve been doing this for 5 years.

I just started.

I’m gonna do this forever.

And the scale you can get with media, especially in other parts of the world, is unmatched.

What can you do?

In your own life, look for scale.

How can you apply it to what you’re doing?

And how hard are you willing to work to get there?

The scale is there, you just have to find it.

Look for scale.
