Why me?
Why me?
Why should someone choose to listen to me?
What makes me different than the millions of other people online trying to get everyone’s attention?
Good question.
I’ve gotten this from several people recently who are in to the content creation business because they’re all about branding and attention.
They’ve asked me a few times - why should I listen to you?
Honestly, I don’t know.
I read a lot.
I can pick up concepts pretty quickly.
I’m a decent writer.
I have an interesting back story having skipped a grade, getting into medical school at 16, graduating as a doctor and leaving to become a healthcare investor at 23.
But it feels like none of that matters.
In the world of online attention, people want quick hits.
They want instantaneous entertainment or value.
They don’t have time to read long-form blog articles…right?
Or do they?
Could I be a person that goes outside of all of the norms to become my own thing?
I think so.
But there’s no path to that.
Many other people have created successful online businesses by hacking different platforms and that’s a strategy I’ve been told to follow.
But what if you go your own path?
What if you stay consistent, produce quality content that you enjoy that provides value to people for a long period of time?
Can you win like that?
My bet is you can.
But you have to stay relentlessly consistent on producing again and again for many years.
Like decades.
That’s what writing and podcasting feel like to me.
The question now is can I actually do that?
Can I continue to write and podcast through all the inevitable failures and criticisms that’ll come my way the next decade, especially if the world goes to shit?
I think so.
I’ve been blazing my path my whole life and it’s gotten me this far so why not keep it up in a completely different domain?
The strongest reason as to ‘why me’ is because I’m creating content that I want to see in the world.
I went back through a lot of old posts today and I love what I’ve created.
That’s enough.
When you love what you do and are happy doing it, so what if you don’t scale and market like everyone else tells you to?
Do you, walk your own path and see where you end up.
Don’t worry about why me? Worry about being consistent.
