Ads everywhere:
Ads everywhere.
All the time.
This weekend I noticed them more than I have before.
America has always been the land of ads.
Always be selling.
Always put your logo everywhere.
Always sponsor something.
Why?
Subtle coercion.
Companies put their logo everywhere so people think about them when they’re going to make buying decisions.
Every segment on an NFL broadcast is sponsored.
All of it.
The NFL loves it because of the money coming in.
The advertisers love it because of the eyeballs that are there.
The fans love it because there’s nothing like live sports.
That’s why live sports continues to win.
Mainstream media is dying.
Cable television is dying.
Advertising through those platforms is dying.
But live sports?
Always wins.
Will always be there.
Won’t disappear.
Especially football in America.
It is religion.
Everyone everywhere is connected to football in some way.
They are either a fan, have a family member who’s a fan or know someone who played.
On vacation in Hawaii this past year, I asked a bartender at the hotel bar about a Bills game.
They were showing it on Peacock, a streaming service, so none of the TVs had it.
As he said ‘local bar scene is really shit when we don’t have games.’
Think of this; all over America, people are at bars watching games.
Buying food, drinking beer, hanging with friends.
Think of the merch they’re wearing.
Think of the food they’re buying.
Think of the alcohol they’re consuming.
Now multiply that everywhere in the country every weekend in the fall.
That’s an audience you can sell to.
Advertisers know it and the sports leagues know it.
You can sell a lot.
A 30 second Super Bowl commercial this year is going for $7 million dollars.
You could argue that’s underpriced.
Compared to our parents' generation when network shows used to get 30+ million every episode, when else is everyone glued to their TV in today’s society?
Never.
We don’t even keep up with the same shows on Netflix anymore.
Everyone’s always at a different spot.
We used to all watch on the same time.
Streaming changed that forever.
Older generations still watch the news and flick through TV.
For younger generations, that world is gone.
No wonder pharma companies are the highest advertisers in the US.
They know their target market.
Even Instagram now.
Since the start of the year, my feed has become more ads.
More every time I scroll.
More every time I watch stories.
More every time I’m on the app.
Our attention has become an advertiser's biggest gold mine.
It’s why social media companies dominate.
It used to be radio then newspapers then TV.
Now it’s our phone.
Be careful.
Ads are everywhere.
