Parents want the best for you

Parents want the best for you.

Just come back from a night with my family partying at an aunt’s birthday.

My goal the whole night was get drunk and have a good time with my cousins.

Hadn’t seen them in many years so this was the night to let loose.

Was dancing, singing and drinking with all of them when at the end of the night I wanted one more shot.

That’s when my dad came up to me and scolded me like a child -

‘Anish, you’re done. You’re not having any more drinks. We’re leaving.’

Like bruh, what the hell?

I’d been partying the whole night and all of a sudden you want to come in and ruin a vibe.

I get it because my parents are always trying to protect me, even after living abroad and caring for myself for many years.

Parents will still be parents.

But this made me mad.

Why now?

Why all of a sudden?

I get it because we were leaving and he thought one more shot was going to put me over, but caman.

When you party with your parents, no matter how old you are, they’re still your parents.

They’re still going to hold you back and not let you make poor decisions.

They’re too worried about you.

The worry never goes away.

But it was frustrating.

I got into it with my dad on the way home.

The rest of my family was quiet while him and I went back and forth over this stupid decision - to take a shot or not.

At the time, I blamed my dad.

Like why are you holding me back?

Why are you not allowing me to live?

Every kid understands this.

Your parents want the best for you but they push their childhood and the way they grew up on you, even though your context and environment are different.

Doesn’t matter to them, they want to parent you based on their own past experiences.

Parents can never let you go, no matter how old or young you are.

They’re always trying to look out for you, and I appreciate that, but man.

Let me live.

Let me screw up.

Let me make mistakes.

Let me make poor decisions.

This is how you learn.

This is how you understand the world.

No one learns from experiences when they were right.

We learn when we were wrong.

So on the way home, we had a fight for half of the ride because of this.

He was ‘protecting me’ while I was arguing I didn’t need protection.

What I learned through this was when you’re drunk, shut up and listen.

There were parts where I felt right and parts where I was wrong.

I didn’t appreciate the way he handled this situation but I know his heart was in a good place because he was worried about my safety and well-being.

Parents will always be parents - they’ll still love you and will always be worried about you.

But you also have to have enough confidence to stand up and say to them - no.

This is my life. I’m going to live it the way I want.

They will not agree with you.

They will fight you and tell you’re wrong.

But remember.

They always want the best for you.
