What are the risks with AI?
What are the risks with AI?
It’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot recently.
I was introduced to AI in 2019.
It was a trend I saw coming up in my industry.
The biotech business.
But not just biotech - healthcare in general.
AI and machine learning models have been in the background of most businesses for a while.
The world just didn’t know about it.
The difference recently was the launch of ChatGPT.
The large language learning model that’s digested trillions of bits of information.
Basically all of the Internet.
Right now, these entities are not conscious.
They’re not sentient.
They don’t think for themselves.
They process data based on what they’ve learned and give you an answer based on what’s the most likely probability.
It’s not good or bad.
It just is.
If you direct it in positive ways, it can give you positive answers.
It can unlock creativity in you that you didn’t know you had.
It can give you structure for things you struggle with.
It can show you new ways to think.
It can also destroy your ability to think.
Most of us don’t do mental math anymore.
Why?
Because calculators are always available on our phone.
So that skill is gone in most people.
Writing will be the same with AI.
Younger generations letting AI do all their writing for them will miss out.
They’re not going to learn how to construct an argument.
Or learn the flow of words.
Or understand how to form a unique opinion.
They’re just gonna regurgitate what they’re told.
In certain circumstances, this is useful.
Like passing tests and getting through school, it’s huge.
For thinking critically, it’s not.
But that’s not the biggest threat IMO.
According to Elon Musk, it’s the far left based in San Francisco pushing their policies on AI so that’s the only way the world thinks.
Elon just did an episode on Joe Rogan.
Absolute must-watch.
Always a pleasure listening to one of the smartest people on the earth.
You can disagree with him and his views all you want, but you can’t discredit his resolve, tenacity and ability to push humanity to imagination we never thought possible.
He gets it.
He understands it.
He really digs into the details.
His fear with AI is it gets adopted by the far left or the extinctionists and they program the AI to destroy the world.
Literally.
There’s a front-page New York Times article talking about groups of people who believe that all humans on earth should be destroyed.
Every. Single. Person.
It’s called the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement.
That’s fucking horrifying.
Apparently, the ones formerly running Twitter had similar philosophies.
If those people program the leading AI tech we all use, we’re screwed.
Royally screwed.
The other big thing to me is how do you know what’s real.
How do you know what you see is actually happening?
AI can create content at scale infinitely and will never stop.
That means propaganda, videos you watch on Youtube and the news you watch.
The line between real and fiction is already blurry.
Now imagine where you don’t know what’s real and not.
Literally 1984.
That is horrifying.
Deep fakes are getting better and better.
Btw there’s a great Johnny Harris video about it.
Another must-watch and one of my favourite Youtubers.
If governments, social media companies and media providers aren’t mandated to show what’s real and what’s fake, we’re screwed.
Imagine AI controls war machines and drones.
Imagine it becomes people’s go-to social companion, exactly like the movie HER.
We’re going into an AI revolution where everything you experience with your 5 senses will be touched by AI.
Everything.
Learn about both sides.
Haven’t seen a great one for its benefit across industries yet.
But this talk by Tristran Harris on its dangers is another must-watch.
Listen. Learn. Think.
I don’t have the answers.
All I know is AI is another stepwise revolution in humanity like the printing press, steam engine and Internet.
This discovery can advance humanity to unthinkable places.
While also having the ability to destroy us in the process.
These are some of the risks I’m thinking about with AI.
