What’s the plan?
What’s the plan?
If this all blows up?
If you were right?
If you’re all of a sudden in major publications?
I don’t know. But who cares.
It’s not here yet. So stop.
Enjoy the moment.
Keep living your life.
Keep enjoying the time spent with family.
Life can change very quickly.
It happened to me.
I went from graduating medicine in Scotland in July 2018 to moving to Amsterdam in October 2018 in an industry I barely understood.
I never planned that.
Never.
Yet I saw an opportunity.
To go all in.
To bet on yourself.
To bet on your ability to navigate world.
That’s risky.
Absolutely.
I got lucky.
I live in a privileged household.
I had opportunities for me after school growing up that most people never do.
I traveled the world on my parent’s dime.
I didn’t earn any of those things.
I got them because I was born into a household where my parents worked hard and earned their way through life.
I can’t control that.
My parents gave me my habits, and I’m lucky for that.
I love golf because my dad introduced me and could afford to let me play growing up.
But I’ve also grown up loving basketball, something that he never introduced to us.
So I still had my own interests.
But a lot of the experiences I’ve had growing up aren’t how most people grow up.
I got to travel the world as a child.
That’s a massive luxury.
I’m not who I am today without that.
Traveling teaches you about life.
It teaches you how small you are.
How much you don’t matter.
There are so many other people out there.
Who are struggling.
Who can’t afford the necessities we take for granted.
Phones.
Internet.
But that’s changing.
That’s what’s so exciting.
So many more people are coming online.
Especially in Africa and India.
Elon’s doing that.
Starlink is incredible.
Everyone should have access to an open Internet.
To learn the things they want.
To go down rabbit holes and learn about something.
The creator economy is going to explode in the next 10 years.
The tools are there for people to become full time creators where they can earn more than if they stayed at their job.
But is there staying power in that?
You could disappear over night.
If you want to do it, it’s about consistency.
Showing up every day.
Day in day out.
To live your truth.
To create the life you wanted.
Yes Theory did that for me.
They’re legends.
They’ve inspired so many people.
A lot of young people.
As more people start coming online and discovering their content, they’ll fall in love.
Their vision is so clear.
Seek discomfort.
It’s at the heart of everything.
If you want to walk your own path, you have to be uncomfortable.
You have to look for uncomfortable situations.
Situations that challenge you.
They challenge who you are.
They challenge your identity.
They force you to confront challenges where you’re not prepared.
But through that there’s experience.
There’s learning.
There’s reflection.
There’s wisdom.
You don’t get that without being uncomfortable.
Without challenging what you thought was possible.
I say this understanding most people don’t get this luxury.
A lot of people don’t have the privilege of time.
Of thinking for yourself.
Kids. Spouses. Cousins. Friends. Colleagues.
It’s a lot.
That’s why I feel so lucky.
Covid opened up time for me.
To work on myself.
To challenge myself.
Lost 30 pounds in a year and got to half marathon training distance.
Read and took notes on 45 books in 2020.
Year before took notes while reading 52 books.
I don’t get that without time.
But it’s also about priority.
To accomplish something different, you have to commit to it.
You have to be all in on something for a little while.
Something that drives you to wake up every day.
People look for that in TV shows, their friends, their surroundings, and it can be miserable.
This is why you need to do something for yourself.
You need to make a contract with yourself that you cannot disappoint.
Obviously if you have kids it’s a little harder.
But there are 24 hours in a day.
Go to bed 1 hour later.
Commit an extra hour of yourself to you.
It’s important to develop who you are.
To develop your identity.
Warren Buffet’s said the best investment he ever made was in himself.
It’s the truth.
There’s a lot of noise.
But by reading, learning, listening, and talking to people outside the trap of social media, you can learn a lot more.
It’s also fun.
Life has to be fun.
Writing is fun to me.
Sports are fun.
Investing is fun.
It’s the ultimate bet on yourself.
Do you have what it takes to compete with the big boys?
To go against the grain and stick around for a long time.
I think so.
I’ll put my knowledge about the world up against anyone.
My job has given me a framework for how to assess companies.
The key things to look for.
Assessing public companies is similar to assessing private companies.
Venture gives you a lot of insight into public companies.
It gives you the freedom to learn.
About the world.
That’s amazing.
But I got lucky to be in this position.
A lot of things had to go right.
Does that mean I don’t deserve to be here?
Absolutely not.
Because I got here.
My experiences got me here.
I got me here.
I went to medical school and got a first class degree.
No one else did that.
I moved halfway around the world to Amsterdam.
I did that.
I got a full time job in venture capital in North America
I did that.
I got through everything while having the greatest university experience of my life.
I met people around the world.
My best friends are from other continents.
That’s a major privilege.
When you’re all together, you realize how similar everyone is.
You have shared experiences growing up.
Yet they’re lives were completely different.
Some used to travel between countries for sports.
I know how lucky I was to be around driven, fun people.
We all knew what we were there for.
It was to get our medical degree.
But we had so much fun.
We lived.
We did something other than look at our phone or stay in our houses.
Have fun.
Do it for you.
Don’t worry about the plan.
